You’ve made it to your final year! Well done! Now you have one more hurdle to overcome before being dispersed into the working world. Although a year seems like a long way ahead, it is important to leverage that time you have left to magnify your pool of possibilities. Here are some tips to get you started:
1. Have goals! And strive towards them
Ask yourself what you want to achieve this year, in your studies, health, relationships, finances and skills. All these elements are interrelated, so nourishing each area of your life is important to your personal growth. When setting goals, ensure that they are S.M.A.R.T (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time based). Be critical about your performances. Ask yourself what makes your work ethic and skills more employable over other candidates.
2. Do your job research and be open minded
Don’t make the mistake of unintentionally applying for a job just for the sake of it, with little knowledge of the position. It is crucial to do your background check to ensure that the company’s mission, culture and values align with your personal ones, so that you remain passionate and satisfied with your job. Another mistake is limiting yourself to jobs in your realm of expertise. Remember that the world is continually changing, so there is a strong need for adaptable and vibrant individuals. Be open minded with trying new concepts and don’t be afraid to apply for positions that spark your curiosity.
3. Get your name out and network
You’ve heard it all before, ‘It’s not what you know, it’s WHO you know’, which certainly applies in our engaged world today. Don’t be afraid to make yourself known at career expos, by asking representatives and experts questions. Follow up after the conversations, add people on LinkedIn and continue to build those strong rapports. This also extends to your tutors, lecturers, mentors and peers. They are your greatest resources and can potentially be the people you worth alongside in the near future.
4. Strengthen your skill sets with hands on experience
With years of theory learnt from your studies, it is the perfect time ever to apply that knowledge into real life contexts and scenarios. If you haven’t already, seek work experiences that foster your skill sets and reinforce your career pathway. Not only will these experiences enhance your CV, but it will give you the confidence to be ready for employability and managing your future.
5. Be reflective
The ability to self-reflect and articulate your feelings and beliefs is the key to success. It is important to acknowledge how each learning experience in your academic journey as brought you one step closer to your future aspirations. Ask yourself how your overarching values in life can be integrated within your job and understand what your own definition of success is. The best way to do this is to keep a journal, where you can look back at your growth.
Finally, don’t forget to enjoy the fun that university has to offer. This may be the last chance you get to experience this lifestyle so take every opportunity to learn something new, challenge yourself and make long life memories.
